When he discovers a Jewish girl hiding in the walls of his house, all bets are off as he must reconcile his preconceived notions with the harsh realities of war. The Austin Chronicle writes, "It's a coming of age story unlike any other, filled with heart and a soul-stirring argument against the ever ready darkness of unswerving, "patriotic" nationalism," while TIME Magazine writes, "It's Waititi's ability to balance unassailably goofy moments with an acknowledgment of real-life horrors that makes the movie exceptional."
